Tampa is the largest business community in the bay, and it brings me the widest range of clients: startups and tech companies around downtown and the university corridor, finance, law and advisory firms in the Westshore and downtown towers, and the nonprofits headquartered here that serve all of Hillsborough County. I also work with growing companies out in Brandon and up in Wesley Chapel, where the same problems show up a few years later.

The HR issues are what you'd expect from fast growth. Startups adding twenty people in a year with contractors who are really employees and equity offers with no employment paperwork behind them. Professional firms hiring their first non-partner staff and learning what exempt and non-exempt mean. Nonprofits running grant-funded payroll with an executive director as the HR department.

From St. Petersburg it's about 30 minutes over the Howard Frankland or the Gandy, so on-site work in Tampa is routine: first meetings, investigations, terminations and training happen in your office. Between visits, most Tampa clients work with me by phone, email and video.
