Plant City

The eastern edge of the county, and a different kind of employer.

Plant City sits at the eastern edge of Hillsborough County, halfway between Tampa and Lakeland on I-4, and its employers look different from anywhere else I work. Agriculture is still the backbone — strawberry growers, packing houses, nurseries and the cold storage and trucking operations that move produce out of the county — alongside food processing and manufacturing plants, distribution centers that chose Plant City for the interstate access, and a historic downtown of family-owned shops, restaurants and professional offices.

The HR questions follow the work. Seasonal crews that swell and shrink with the harvest, and the overtime rules that do and don't apply to agricultural labor. Packing and processing lines with hourly shifts, bilingual teams and safety records that have never been reviewed as a whole. Family companies passing to a second generation that wants written policies where there were only habits. And once a company crosses 25 employees, an E-Verify requirement that a surprising number of Plant City employers haven't heard of.

Plant City is about 50 minutes from my St. Petersburg base by I-4, so most of my work with Plant City companies runs by phone, email and video, with on-site visits reserved for the things that need a person in the room: investigations, terminations, and training for supervisors and crew leads. That mix keeps costs sensible for you and still gets me there when it counts.
