Palmetto

Palmetto sits on the north bank of the Manatee River, and it's the first Manatee County city you reach from St. Petersburg — straight over the Skyway Bridge, about 30 minutes door to door. The employers here are working businesses: Port Manatee and the trucking, warehousing and logistics companies that serve it, tomato and vegetable growers and packing houses, boat builders and marine services along the river, distribution operations near the I-275 and I-75 interchange, and a small downtown of family-owned shops and offices along 8th Avenue.

The HR issues are what you'd expect from hourly, physical work. Shifts and overtime nobody has audited. Seasonal crews and the agricultural rules that apply to some jobs and not others. Safety and injury documentation kept in three places. Supervisors promoted from the floor who have never been shown how to handle a complaint or a termination. And I-9 and E-Verify files that need to be right before an audit, not after.

Because Palmetto is so close, on-site work is routine — for many companies it's a shorter drive for me than parts of Pinellas. First meetings, investigations, difficult conversations and supervisor training happen at your yard, your plant or your office. Handbooks, classification reviews and day-to-day questions run by phone and email, usually answered the same business day.

Yes, routinely. Palmetto is about 30 minutes from my St. Petersburg base over the Skyway — closer than some of Pinellas — so on-site meetings, investigations and training at your yard, plant or office are normal, with no travel charge.
