Bradenton is the county seat and the business center of Manatee County, and its employers are a real mix: manufacturers and marine businesses along the river and out toward the port, medical practices and home-health agencies around the hospitals, tourism and hospitality operators feeding Anna Maria Island and the beaches, nonprofits serving the county from downtown, and the law, accounting and advisory firms along Manatee Avenue and the Riverwalk. It's a community where a lot of companies have been in the family for decades and a lot of new ones have arrived in the last five years.

The HR problems land in the gap between those two groups. Established manufacturers with a long-tenured crew, a handbook from 2009 and an owner who has never had to terminate anyone properly. Practices where the office manager is the HR department. Hospitality teams with tipped staff and seasonal swings. Nonprofits running grant-funded payroll with an executive director who signs everything and reads none of it.

From St. Petersburg it's about 35 minutes over the Skyway Bridge and down US-41, so on-site work in Bradenton is routine: first meetings, investigations, terminations and training happen at your office or your plant. Day-to-day questions and policy work run by phone and email, usually answered the same business day. Manatee County has no local employment ordinances of its own, which is one less thing to track — but Florida's rules still apply in full.
